Subtitles Café, Dalston is first and foremost a great café, serving great food and drink, run by great people. Great cafes are, however, commonplace – especially in the cultural hub of East London – and this is where Subtitles with its curios and quirky goings on comes into its own.

Opened in early 2015 by coffee, film and music enthusiasts Lukas and Jade, Subtitles quickly built a loyal clientele comprised of people who didn’t just want to talk about art in their local social; but also want to experience it. Weekly showings of hand-picked, cult Czech films (with subitles) proved instantly popular; and as with the food and drink, there was a focus on quality – no chaff, no quick fix additives… Subtitles was earning itself a reputation as a supplier of wholesome, exemplary produce and entertainment.

Keeping in line with the cinematic theme, beautiful, first edition prints of original posters for a range of films can be purchased in the café – including a host of rarities from around Europe and especially the Czech Republic.

Early in 2016 a selection of high calibre vinyl went on sale – just like the films on show, the records are handpicked, spanning a variety of genres and owing to the nature of the selection process, everything on sale is a killer releases in its own right. Expect to pick up the finest editions of the latest Radiohead, classics from Bowie, Aphex Twin and Massive Attack, cult rarities such as Slint’s Spiderland and cuts from local rising stars. Starting out with a small limited selection, the shop is ever expanding and Subtitles is now becoming considered a bona fide record store.

With live music now added to the calendar – recent intimate performances from The Kafka Band and The Microdance went down a storm – it is easy to see how Subtitles is regarded by its loving customers as so much more than a place to grab your pre-work latte. We welcome you to spend as much time as you like with us, taking in all we have curated for your entertainment, education and most importantly good times.

“Stumbled onto this little gem!
Got a great tasting sandwich and poke around some cool film posters and magazines. Really good service. I’ll be back!

I always have a mocha and sit by the window. The coffee is superb.
Lukas, the barista, is so friendly. And the ambience is so LIGHT with the huge windows.
I feel like I’m outside in the heart of Dalston.
